What is River rafting?
Rafting is an adventure activity where you sit in an inflatable raft and navigate through a body of water that is generally not calm hence the term “Shoot the rapids”. This activity is usually done on whitewater where the speed of the water creates turbulence (rapids). Maneuvering is usually done with oars for better control. You will have an instructor with you and there is high safety so you won’t have to worry about anything, especially if you are a first timer.
Rafting in Goa at Valpoi (Mhadei River) :
Your trip begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 pm. You will spend a good two hours hurtling down the raging waters of Mhadei River. The reason why the monsoons is the only time this activity is carried out is because of the swells in the river due to the rainfall making it an optimum time for this thrilling sport.
The whitewater rafting happens in Mhadei River in Valpoi, Sattari. It is located in North Goa. Valpoi is a village in the Sattari Taluka, surrounded by nature. The temperature is relatively cool thanks to the trees that keep the heat away. It is one of the most beautiful areas in Goa. There are plenty of waterfalls, tiny riverlets, and springs to see. It is also an ideal place for trekking and hiking because of the hills. The Western Ghats lie to the east of Valpoi where some of the highest hills are found. Vagheri hills and Chorla ghats are ideal for trekking and hiking.
About Location:
Mhadei River is one of the lifelines of Goa. This river enters the state from Valpoi Sattari, and from Uttar Kannada, a district of Karnataka, located close to Castle Rock. The river meets the ocean at Miramar Beach. These waters meander through the tiny state of Goa and meet the Zuari River at the Cumbarjua canal backwaters.
Valpoi is also home to the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa’s newest sanctuary, located in the Western Ghats. It was declared as a wildlife preservation in 1999. It is home to an array of flora and fauna. Most of the sanctuary is covered with forest. The Western Ghats is famous for its biodiversity.
Things to Know:
You will be given life jackets which you will have to wear from the beginning to the end of the ride even if you are a strong swimmer and experienced river rafter. This is a good activity for groups and families. However, we do not allow children below 12 and people who are below 4 feet.
You will need to wear light clothes because you are bound to get wet. Carry a change of clothes along because it is not very comfortable to remain in wet clothes for long hours.
